As I’ve said before, my entire album ‘Dark Night of the Soul’ is a musical allegory for a journey through emotional darkness/suffering and coming out the other side of it. We all go through things in life, loss of a loved one, divorce, major life changes etc. ‘Racing Against the Sunset’ is one of those songs. The trauma has occurred and darkness is closing in and we cannot escape it no matter how hard we try to out run it. The only way out is through.
Musically I wanted it to be a galloping piece in B minor that modulates to C minor. I think my favorite part of the song is the key change about halfway through.

Love this song, just finished learning how to play.
Really makes the left hand get a workout!
Key changes are amazing 🙂
Thank you for your beautiful music, Philip. You can feel the emotion being ported by the sounds. The music you are making is… very much alive. Your strength is that you don’t fear taling about life events and putting it all out there. We can all identify with it.
This has also been a long-time favorite of mine to play and usually makes me sweat by the end of it:)
