Today’s question comes from Rob. He asks…

“Although songs are subjective, what makes a song truly special?”

Good question Rob! Not always easy to answer because if I knew the secret sauce, every song would be an “it” song. I can’t speak for other artists but I can say for myself a lot of my music tends to be in minor keys. I just love the sound of them, and they tend to be really emotional and emotive.

I remember in my early years performing in retail spaces and noticing that almost every time it was a minor key song that would draw people in over and over.

I think a good song has great chord progressions, catchy melody, and played passionately. In particular I like songs that start off with a simple motif and builds/expands upon that motif and ends as simple as it began. You’ll find lots of songs in my catalog that are built like that.
