Interview with Michael Logozar

I grew up in rural Alberta Canada and am grateful that my parents saw some musicality in me when I was picking out melodies on the piano at a young age. They enrolled me in piano lessons which I worked hard at for most of my school years. I studied a pretty typical classical piano repertoire, although I often get distracted with my own improvisations and writing songs. After school I pursued a technology career for many years although the music never left me. I found myself building studios and recording others and eventually releasing my own music and focusing more and more in that area, which is where I spend most my time now.

I’ve always enjoyed the more melodic side of classical music, especially when there is lots of subtle movement between the

melodies. Mendelssohn and Chopin were two of the composers that come to mind. As a teenager and young adult I was also drawn to the melodies of the budding new age piano movement often shown by artists on the Narada and Windham Hill labels.

When writing I’m often reflecting on the goodness of God, family, nature, and other facets of life. There is beauty all around if we are aware of it and I hope to capture some of it sonically in a way that can provide comfort and joy to others. I am also drawn to musical patterns and most of my songs start off as improvisations around an interesting pattern or voicing, after which I work on the structure of the song.

My catalog is rapidly growing, so I’m starting to lose track a bit and sometimes when listening to piano based playlists or radio it takes me more time than it should to recognize my own songs. I find that the more songs I write, the less I am attached to any given one, but lately I would say that my favorite song to play would be Aria, a joyful song aptly named after our 6 year old. My favorite for background listening would be Timelapse which is currently going through a bit of a resurgence because of a bunch of TikTok users putting it in their videos.

Meeting my wife Kendra who is such a kind soul and brilliant musician answers both categories there. Career and family life are not so separate these days and we make a good team for both.

Finding time for creativity during the many years I had to create music on the side was hard, and I know many musicians can relate. Now that I get to spend most of my time in music, there are other challenges in continuing to find new ways to express myself and staying interested and engaged, but it’s worth it. There are endless possibilities for creativity and often it just takes making the time and getting started for something good to happen.

I want my music to be able to provide comfort and joy for the different seasons in life people are in.
