Welcome back to the music theory series. Today we’re looking at minor seventh chords. Let’s start by looking at the natural a minor scale on the treble staff and the keyboard…

As you remember from earlier posts a basic triad would make up the notes of A C E.  That’s the first, third, and fifth degree of the scale.  Add the seventh degree of the scale and that would be A C E G. The spelling out of that chord would be a minor seventh chord. Let’s see that on the staff and keyboard…

When you play them you’ll notice the chords sound more colorful. You can create them from any minor triad from any minor scale.  Until next time practice building minor seventh chords and play them up and down the keyboard.
