Minor 13 Chords

Welcome back to the Music Theory series. Today we’re looking at the minor 13 chord. First let’s look at the A Minor scale in the treble staff and the piano keyboard…

The minor 13 chord is based on the scale degrees of 1 3 5 7 11 13. In this case the notes are A C E G B D F#

Let’s see what that would look like on the treble staff and the piano keyboard…

You’ll notice that while the natural a minor scale has an f natural in it the 13th chord actually has a major 13. In this case f sharp.

You can build any minor 13 chord on any root note using this formula. Until next time practice building and playing your minor 13 chords.
