Lamentations of the Heart'- Behind the music

‘Lamentations of the Heart’ is one of my more popular songs and I recorded it three separate times over the course of a decade. You can hear it on my albums ‘Finding Solace’ ‘Dark Night of the Soul’ & ‘Heart to Hands’. The song is in the key of E minor (one of my favorite keys) and in common time. The song is about experiencing terrible heartache, grief/loss and is a passionate expression of that.

When the song first appeared on my ‘Finding Solace’ album it was a bit of a standout as that entire album is in major keys and Lamentations was the only song fully in a minor key.

Do you remember Borders Books and Music? Well when I first started out in late 2002/early 2003 I performed exclusively in retail spaces including Borders and shopping malls. I kept noticing that it wasn’t always the pretty major key key songs that attracted people, but whenever I was playing Lamentations it was like a magnet. People would stop in their tracks to listen to that song for whatever reason. And it happened over and over. So much so that I eventually decided to release albums with more and more minor key music.

It’s become one of those songs that I play at nearly every concert/live performance. How I play it has evolved over the years but it’s essentially the same song.
