Hark the Herald Angels Sing- behind the music

Hark the Herald Angles Sing is a sacred Christmas poem of English origin written in 1739 by Charles Wesley and was included in John Wesley’s Hymns and Sacred Poems and is about the birth of the baby Jesus and redemption of mankind. Some of the original wording was changed by George Whitefield from “Hark how all the Welkin rings” to “Hark! the Herald Angels sing”. The actually melody of the song we know today is from Festgesang by German composer Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) from the early Romantic Period of music.

This tune has been covered countless times over the centuries and across different genres of music. My performance of it is from one of my Christmas albums, ‘Comfort & Joy’.
