Auld Lang Syne- Behind the music.

The words from ‘Auld Lang Syne’ (meaning ‘once upon a time’, or ‘days gone by’) comes from Scottish poet Robert Burns. Written in the late 1700s, it was quickly adopted to a traditional folk tune and was brought to America by the Scottish and English speaking countries. It’s become synonymous with bidding fair well to the old year and ringing in the new year.

The melody is based off a Pentatonic scale. My solo piano version uses big widely spaced chords in the left hand and is played in a pensive yet nostalgic manner. I have fairly large hands with a bigger reach so pianists with smaller hands might want to roll the chords.
